Claude Dashboards and Motion: how Anthropic's live dashboards and animations work
Short answer
Claude Dashboards and Motion are two beta features Anthropic launched on October 8, 2026. Dashboards connects to a data warehouse like Snowflake or BigQuery, or an app like Salesforce, writes the SQL for each chart and keeps the dashboard current, on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Motion turns a report or chart into a short animation built as code, which you export as an MP4, on Team and Enterprise only.
What are Claude Dashboards and Motion?
Both are new artifact templates inside Claude. Anthropic announced them on October 8, 2026: "Claude can turn your data into a dashboard that stays current, and your ideas into an animated explainer for your next presentation."
The pitch is about two kinds of waiting. Anthropic's article says asking questions about company data "usually means filing a ticket or writing SQL," and ideas that would land better in motion "usually end up as another static slide." Dashboards goes after the first problem, Motion the second.
People noticed. The @claudeai launch post had more than 10.9 million views and close to 60,000 likes when we checked it on October 12.
How do Claude Dashboards work?
A dashboard is an artifact made from the Dashboards template. According to the Claude Help Center, Claude writes a SQL query for each chart and runs it against your data source. Each chart shows its query, so you can see exactly what it's counting, and when its data was last refreshed.
You start one of three ways: ask for it in any chat, pick "Output" in the message box and choose "Dashboards," or open the Artifacts tab and select a Dashboards template. Anthropic's own example prompts look like this:
- "Build a dashboard of this quarter's revenue by region."
- "Show weekly signups for the last six months, split by plan."
- "Make a dashboard of my open Salesforce opportunities by stage and owner."
From there you refine it in plain language ("Add a filter for region," "Change this to a weekly view"). If a number looks wrong, open that chart's query and tell Claude what it should count instead. Every dashboard is saved in the Artifacts tab and starts private to you.
The help page's best tip is to ask a question rather than order a chart. "How do this month's signups by channel compare with last month's?" gets you further than "a signups chart." If the data sits in a specific table or app, name it.
Can Claude create live dashboards from Snowflake or BigQuery?
Yes, once the data is connected. The supported warehouses Anthropic names are Amazon Redshift, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks and Snowflake. Dashboards also work with apps you've already connected to Claude, so a Salesforce pipeline dashboard is fair game.
"Live" here means the dashboard keeps current as the data changes, rather than being a one-off chart you have to regenerate. Anthropic is clear about the intended use: quick, exploratory questions, like how this week's signups compare with last month's.
Does Claude Dashboards replace Power BI or Tableau?
Anthropic doesn't position it that way. The launch article says "Dashboards work alongside your BI and analytics tools." When a question needs deeper analysis, you send the dashboard to Amplitude, Grafana, Hex, Mixpanel, Omni, Perplexity, PostHog or Sigma and keep going there. Looker, monday.com and Tableau are listed as coming soon. Power BI isn't on either list.
So think of it as the fast first pass: the chart you'd otherwise file a ticket for, with the SQL visible so someone who knows the data can check it.
What is Claude Motion?
Claude Motion turns your own content into short animations, like an explainer for an all-hands, an animated chart for a board deck, or a product walkthrough for customer onboarding. The Motion help page explains the key design choice: Claude builds the animation "as code that animates the text, charts, shapes, and images in it, and it plays like a short video."
Because it's code, you can change one detail and leave the rest alone. Ask in the chat ("Slow down the second scene," "Change the Q3 number to 18%") or adjust it yourself in the editor. When it's done, click "Export" and choose MP4.
Starting one works like Dashboards: ask in any chat, choose "Output" and then "Motion," or pick a Motion template in the Artifacts tab. The help page suggests saying who will watch it, where it will play and roughly how long it should be, and attaching the report, data or images you want it built from.
Can Claude make motion graphics? Claude Motion vs AI video generators
It can make animated graphics, but not footage. Anthropic says Claude Motion "doesn't use a video generation model, so it doesn't create realistic footage or people." That's the main difference from text-to-video tools. You get moving text, numbers, charts and your own images, with every word and timing editable.
For anything beyond that, Anthropic lists Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Higgsfield, invideo, Luma AI and Runway as places to open a Motion piece, with Canva and Captions coming soon. Descript's help page adds two practical details: the animation arrives in Descript as a flat video, so you change headlines, colors or timing back in Claude, and each import uses Descript media minutes.
Code-built animation is having a moment on the developer side too. ManimGX is an open-source engine where a coding agent writes Manim-style Python and a Rust GPU core renders math and 3D scenes. Motion is the no-setup version for business explainers inside Claude.
Which plans get Claude Dashboards and Motion?
- Claude Dashboards: beta on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Not on Free.
- Claude Motion: beta on Team and Enterprise only. Not on Free, Pro or Max.
Neither has a separate price listed in the help pages. Both count toward your plan's usage limits like the rest of your Claude work, and the Motion page warns that longer or more complex animations use more of your limit than a typical message.
On Team plans, Motion is on by default. On Enterprise, both features are off until an owner turns them on in Organization settings > Artifacts, and owners can limit them to specific groups with custom roles.
If you're on Pro or Max and already using the Claude Code Projects beta, Dashboards is open to your plan too. Motion isn't.
Can you share Claude dashboards and animations?
Yes, with limits set by your admin. The launch article says you can share slides, designs, dashboards and animations with people outside your organization, "or with anyone who has the link, if your admin allows it." Your team and Claude can also work on the same dashboard together.
The Artifacts admin guide has the fine print. External link sharing and email invitations outside the organization are two separate settings. Artifacts that use connected apps, or that ask Claude questions, can't use "Anyone with the link." And people need a Claude account to open any artifact except a legacy artifact published from chat. Check those settings before you promise a client a live dashboard link.
What changed for Claude Docs, Slides and Design?
The same announcement took Docs, Slides and Design out of beta and put them on every plan, Free included. Anthropic says people have made more than 45 million docs, decks and designs in Claude. The update adds customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK) for artifacts, PowerPoint and PDF exports that match the editor, decks sent to Google Slides as editable files, and editing in the Claude mobile app.
Two dates matter for admins. On Enterprise plans, Docs, Slides and Design turn on by default on October 15, 2026. And the standalone Claude Design site at claude.ai/design closes on December 14, 2026. The migration guide says you can move design systems now with "Migrate team design systems" on the Artifacts page, but chats with Claude and comments on standalone projects don't carry over, so save what you need first.
