Is ChatGPT Pro worth it? ChatGPT Pro vs Claude Max calculator

Short answer
ChatGPT Pro ($100 to $500) or Claude Max ($100 or $200) is worth it only if the time you lose to usage limits costs more than the jump from a $20 plan. Enter how often you hit limits and what your hour is worth; the calculator shows the break-even point.
Is ChatGPT Pro worth it? How to read the result
The big number is what hitting limits costs you each month in lost time. Add your current plan price and you get what you're really paying. For each vendor, the calculator picks the most capable plan that fits inside that figure. Break-even is how many limit hits a week it takes before that plan pays for itself compared with what you pay now. If you already hit limits more often than that, upgrade. If not, keep your plan.
How the AI plan calculator works
- Lost time per month = hits per week × minutes lost ÷ 60 × hourly rate × 52 ÷ 12
- Effective spend = current plan price + lost time per month
- Recommended plan = the priciest plan per vendor that costs no more than your effective spend, starting from the cheapest plan that suits your main use
- Break-even hits per week = (recommended plan price − current plan price) ÷ (minutes lost ÷ 60 × hourly rate × 52 ÷ 12)
Two assumptions sit behind this. First, an upgrade removes most of the limit hits. That's roughly true when moving to 5x or 20x more usage, but no vendor guarantees it. Second, the minimum plan per use is our judgment: for coding we start at ChatGPT Plus (full Codex), Claude Pro (Claude Code) and Google AI Pro (Jules and Antigravity); for research at Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro (1M context); for writing at ChatGPT Go, Claude Pro and Google AI Plus. Usage across vendors isn't comparable, because none of them publishes message counts.

ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro usage limits
Both cost $20 a month, and neither tells you how many messages you get. OpenAI says Plus "may include usage limits such as message caps", which change with demand. Anthropic is more specific about the shape: Pro gives at least 5x Free usage per five-hour session, weekly limits sit on top, and Claude Code draws from the same pool as your chats. Google works the same way: Gemini limits refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap, and AI Pro gets 4x Free usage. On context, Google AI Pro lists 1M tokens, Claude lists up to 1M depending on the model, and ChatGPT Plus lists 256K for reasoning models.
Is Claude Max worth it?
Max 5x ($100) gives 5x Pro's per-session usage and Max 20x ($200) gives 20x. Both add $100 or $200 a month in Claude API credits, which changes the maths if you'd build on the API anyway. If most of your Claude use is Claude Code, run your numbers through our Claude Code API cost calculator too: at low volume, paying per token can beat any plan. If you run several coding threads at once, read What is Claude Code Projects?, since parallel threads use up limits faster.
