"Hey Grok" on iPhone: how to set it up, and what the viral trick really does

Short answer

Yes, you can say "Hey Grok" on an iPhone, but it isn't a real wake word. The trick uses Apple's Vocal Shortcuts, an accessibility feature in iOS 18 and later (iPhone 12 or newer), to run a shortcut with the Grok Bot app's "Start Voice Chat with Bot" action. It opens a voice chat with your Bot in Grok Bot, which is a separate app from the regular Grok chatbot. On a locked phone you still tap Continue once, and Grok Bot itself needs a paid plan. On an iPhone 15 Pro or later, the Action Button does the same thing in one press.

A retyped copy of the viral October 25, 2026 post by @Texas_Twins_Dad (1.87M views) above a table of what the trick really is: Apple Vocal Shortcuts plus a Grok Bot shortcut, one tap on a locked phone, iOS 18 and iPhone 12 or newer, or the Action Button on iPhone 15 Pro and later.
Figure: the viral post retyped by us (not a screenshot), with facts from Apple's iPhone User Guide, xAI's Grok Bot docs and @bot on X, checked October 26, 2026.

What does the viral "Hey Grok" iPhone post say?

On October 25, 2026 at 04:48 UTC (08:48 Dubai), @Texas_Twins_Dad posted: "Everyone said 'Hey Grok' was impossible on iPhone. Even Grok said Apple keeps wake words for Siri only. So I kept digging, and I found a way." He promised "no extra apps, no cost, all built into iOS" and listed four steps, with a 46-second video.

When we checked through the X API on the morning of October 26 (Dubai):

  • @Texas_Twins_Dad: 1,874,868 views, 7,492 likes, 11,521 bookmarks, 790 reposts and 746 replies. That is 1.5 bookmarks per like, which usually means people saved it to set up later.
  • Elon Musk quoted it 1 hour 41 minutes later with one word, "Cool": 2,241,232 views and 15,145 likes.
  • @minchoi: 30,384 views and 203 bookmarks for "This guy literally figured out how to make 'Hey Grok' work on iPhone."

Posts matching "hey grok" and iPhone went from 85 on October 24 to 930 on October 25 (UTC), with copies in Chinese, Arabic, German and French. That is a lot of people about to try it, so here is the setup and what the post leaves out.

How do you set up "Hey Grok" on iPhone?

These are the creator's steps, cross-checked against Apple's Vocal Shortcuts guide and a locked-phone test by Sound Minds on October 25. You need the Grok Bot app with an eligible plan (more on that below).

  1. Update Grok Bot and open it once. The Shortcuts app only lists an app's actions after it has been opened.
  2. Build the shortcut. Open Shortcuts, tap +, then Add Action, search "Grok Bot" and pick Start Voice Chat with Bot. Choose the Bot you want to talk to, or Ask Each Time. Name the shortcut "Hey Grok" so it is easy to find.
  3. Train the phrase. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Vocal Shortcuts. Tap Set Up the first time, or Add Action if you already use Vocal Shortcuts. Pick your shortcut, type "Hey Grok", then say it out loud when asked. The creator says three times.
  4. Allow it on the lock screen. In the shortcut's details, under Privacy, turn on Allow Running When Locked.
  5. Test it. Say "Hey Grok". Sound Minds reports that the first run asks whether to allow Live Activities from Grok Bot. Tap Always Allow and it stops asking.

We have not run these steps on our own iPhone, so we can't add anything beyond what the creator, Apple and Sound Minds describe.

Why did Grok say "Hey Grok" was impossible?

Because, strictly, it still is. A true wake word is an always-on listener that an app registers with the phone. In October, Cursor support wrote on its forum that "a custom 'Hey Grok' wake word isn't really possible: iOS and Android only let the built-in assistant listen for a wake word in the background, not regular apps."

The trick doesn't break that rule. Grok Bot is not listening. Apple is. Vocal Shortcuts lets you "teach iPhone to perform an action when you speak a word or another sound of your choosing," and Apple says the "audio is processed on device." Apple built it for people with atypical speech, but the action can be any shortcut, including one that opens a Grok Bot call. So the answer the creator got was right about wake words and wrong about what you can do anyway.

Does "Hey Grok" work with the regular Grok app?

Not with this setup. The action in step 2 belongs to Grok Bot, xAI's agent app with Bots that run on a cloud computer. xAI's Grok FAQ says Grok Bot "is not the same as Grok on grok.com or the Grok mobile apps." Sound Minds gives the same warning for the Action Button: pick Start Voice Chat under Grok Bot, "not the regular Grok app, since they're two separate apps."

So when the shortcut runs, you get a live voice call with your Bot, the same one you get by tapping the waveform button in an empty message box. Per Cursor's voice chat help page, you can mute, hang up, show a transcript and change the voice, speed and language, and a Voice chat card with the transcript lands in the chat after you hang up.

We didn't find any documented Shortcuts action in the regular Grok app that would make the same trick start Grok's own voice mode, so we can't tell you whether that works.

Is "Hey Grok" on iPhone free?

The trick is. Grok Bot isn't. Shortcuts and Vocal Shortcuts are part of iOS, so you install nothing and pay nothing for the phrase. But per Cursor's Grok Bot plans page, on The X Subscription Grok Bot is "included on Premium, Super, and Ultra," and "Plus and Free don't include it." It is also included on every paid legacy Cursor plan, and you can unlock it by linking a SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, SuperGrok Heavy or X Premium+ subscription. Voice chats draw from the same weekly usage pool as everything else on your plan.

So "no cost" is true only if you already pay for a plan that includes Grok Bot.

Is it really hands-free?

Only when the phone is already unlocked. The creator's own fine print says: "If your phone is locked, iOS asks for one tap first. If Face ID already unlocked it, it's fully hands-free." Sound Minds tested it twice on a locked iPhone running iOS 27.0.1 and saw a "Start Voice Chat with Bot" prompt that needed a tap on Continue every time. They did not test it unlocked.

Three more things to know before you leave it on:

  • The mic stays on. Apple says that while Vocal Shortcuts is set up, an icon shows in the status bar because it is using the microphone to listen. The listening happens on the phone.
  • Some people see slowdowns. Sound Minds says its iPhone 16 Pro Max got noticeably slower and charged more slowly with Vocal Shortcuts on, and calls that its own experience, not a documented Apple issue. We haven't seen other reports to confirm it.
  • It won't help in CarPlay. Replying to a user on X, the @grok account said the Vocal Shortcuts setup is for the iPhone itself and does not work with CarPlay. We didn't test that either.

To turn it off, go to Settings > Accessibility > Vocal Shortcuts and switch it off, or tap Edit to delete just the "Hey Grok" phrase.

Which iPhones support "Hey Grok"?

You need two things. The Grok Bot app needs an "iPhone with iOS 18 or later," according to xAI's Grok Bot for Mobile docs. And Vocal Shortcuts needs newer hardware: Apple's iOS 18 feature notes, as listed by Ars Technica, say Vocal Shortcuts requires an iPhone 12 or newer. An iPhone XR, XS or 11 can run iOS 18 but can't use this trick.

What about the Action Button instead?

If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later, this is the cleaner option, and it is the one xAI actually announced. On October 19, the Grok Bot account on X posted "Set it as your iPhone's Action Button and press it to talk with Bot" (2,825,677 views, 17,441 likes when we checked), then explained: "On an iPhone 15 Pro or later, update Grok Bot to 1.16. Then go to Settings → Action Button, swipe to Shortcut, and choose Grok Bot → Start Voice Chat."

It is one press, there is no always-on mic, and you can use both. For iPhones without an Action Button, Sound Minds suggests trying Apple's Back Tap (Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap) with the same shortcut, but says it hasn't tested that.

Is there a "Hey Grok" wake word on Android?

Not one we could find documented. Cursor support's forum reply covers Android too, and the feature request is still open. On the same thread, a user wrote on October 23 thanking the team for adding Grok Bot "as a default assistant option on Android on Oct 20." We couldn't find that in the help pages we read, so treat it as one user's report. On any phone, you can start a voice chat inside Grok Bot: open the Bot's chat, leave the message box empty and choose Start voice chat.

This is the pattern we keep seeing with viral AI tips. The free Claude Opus 5.5 in Antigravity claim and the Oxion DEVWEEK code both left out the fine print. This one holds up much better: the steps are real and they use Apple's own feature. The fine print is the paid plan, the tap on a locked phone and the fact that it opens Grok Bot, not Grok. FAQ

Can you say Hey Grok on iPhone?

Yes, with a workaround. Apple doesn't let third-party apps register their own wake word, but iOS 18 and later include Vocal Shortcuts, an accessibility feature that runs an action when you say a phrase you trained. Point it at a shortcut that uses the Grok Bot app's Start Voice Chat with Bot action, train the phrase Hey Grok, and saying it opens a Grok Bot voice chat.

How do I set up Hey Grok on iPhone?

Update the Grok Bot app and open it once. In the Shortcuts app tap +, Add Action, search Grok Bot and pick Start Voice Chat with Bot. Then go to Settings > Accessibility > Vocal Shortcuts, tap Set Up (or Add Action), choose that shortcut, type Hey Grok and say it three times when asked. Finally, turn on Allow Running When Locked in the shortcut's details.

Does Hey Grok work with the regular Grok app?

Not with this method. The Start Voice Chat with Bot action belongs to Grok Bot, xAI's agent app, which xAI's FAQ says is not the same as Grok on grok.com or the Grok mobile apps. The viral setup opens a voice chat with your Bot in Grok Bot, not the Grok chatbot app.

Is Hey Grok on iPhone free?

The trick itself costs nothing: Shortcuts and Vocal Shortcuts are built into iOS. Grok Bot is not free, though. On The X Subscription it is included on Premium, Super and Ultra, not on Plus or Free. It is also included on paid legacy Cursor plans, or through a linked SuperGrok or X Premium+ subscription.

Why does Hey Grok ask me to tap Continue?

On a locked iPhone, iOS asks for one tap before the shortcut can start the voice chat, even with Allow Running When Locked turned on. The creator of the viral post says it is fully hands-free only when Face ID has already unlocked the phone. A tester at Sound Minds reported the same tap on every locked-phone run.

Which iPhones support Hey Grok?

You need iOS 18 or later and an iPhone that supports Vocal Shortcuts. Apple's iOS 18 feature notes, as listed by Ars Technica, say Vocal Shortcuts requires an iPhone 12 or newer. The Grok Bot app also needs iOS 18 or later, per xAI's docs. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later, the Action Button is a one-press alternative.

Is there a Hey Grok wake word on Android?

Not that we could find documented. In October 2026, Cursor support said on its forum that a custom Hey Grok wake word isn't really possible because iOS and Android only let the built-in assistant listen in the background. On Android you can start a voice chat inside Grok Bot by leaving the message box empty and choosing Start voice chat.
