llms.txt generator: build and check an llms.txt file in the llmstxt.org format

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server.

Short answer

An llms.txt file is a short markdown file at /llms.txt that tells AI agents what your site is and which pages to read. The only required part is an H1 with the site name; after that come an optional blockquote summary, optional notes, and H2 sections listing links as - [name](url): notes. Fill in the form below and this llms.txt generator writes the file for you, checks it against the llmstxt.org format, and lets you download it. Google says it does not use llms.txt for Search rankings; agents and other tools are the audience.

Fill in the form.

Paste a file and press Validate.

What is an llms.txt file?

llms.txt is a proposal by Jeremy Howard, first published on September 3, 2024 and updated to v2 on August 10, 2026 (llmstxt.org). The idea: web pages are built for people, wrapped in navigation, ads and scripts, and agents waste tokens digging the useful text out. A small markdown file at a known path gives them a curated map instead.

It has caught on. The v2 page says thousands of sites publish one, Chrome's Lighthouse checks for it in its agentic browsing audits, and OpenAI, Anthropic and Google's Gemini docs publish their own. Yoast SEO, AIOSEO, Wix, Mintlify and GitBook can generate one automatically.

What goes in an llms.txt file? The format, section by section

The spec lists these parts, in this order:

  1. An H1 with the site or project name. The only required section.
  2. A blockquote (> ...) with a short summary holding the key facts needed to understand the rest.
  3. Optional notes: paragraphs or lists of any kind, but no headings.
  4. Zero or more H2 sections, each a "file list": a markdown list where every item is a link [name](url), optionally followed by : and notes.

An H2 called Optional has a special meaning by convention: agents can skip those links when they need a shorter context. The file can live at the site root or at any sub-path (for example /docs/llms.txt), and it covers the URLs under that path.

The spec also suggests offering clean markdown copies of important pages at the same URL plus .md, and linking them with rel="alternate" type="text/markdown". The links in llms.txt should point to LLM-friendly content where you have it.

How does this llms.txt generator work?

  • Each line in a section becomes a list item. Write Title | URL | notes, just a URL (the title is made from the slug), or an existing markdown link.
  • Line breaks in the name and summary are folded into one line; headings typed into the notes box are stripped, because the spec allows no headings there.
  • Empty sections are dropped. Square brackets in titles are escaped so links stay valid.
  • The validator checks the rules above: an H1 first, only one H1, no H3 or deeper, the blockquote before the first H2, and every list item under an H2 in - [name](url): notes form. It warns if there is no summary, no sections, or the file passes 5,000 words.

Everything runs in your browser with plain JavaScript; there is no crawler and nothing is uploaded. That also means it cannot read your sitemap for you: paste the URLs you care about.

Building this tool caught a real mistake in our own file: the Contact section had a bare - Instagram: https://... line instead of a markdown link. The validator flagged it, and we fixed it.

Does llms.txt help SEO or Google rankings?

Not for Google. On June 15, 2026, Google added a note to its AI optimization guide saying llms.txt files are not needed for Google Search and will not help or hurt visibility or rankings, while it is fine to keep one for other services (Google Search Central changelog). The audience is AI agents and tools that read the file when a user asks about your site, such as coding agents fetching documentation.

How do you publish and test an llms.txt file?

  1. Download the file and upload it as /llms.txt at your site root (or /docs/llms.txt for just your docs).
  2. Open it in a browser and confirm it returns plain text with a 200 status.
  3. Optionally link it from your pages with <link rel="alternate" type="text/plain" href="/llms.txt">; the v2 spec also describes rel="describedby".
  4. Do what the spec suggests: give an agent only your llms.txt and ask it questions about your site. If it can't answer, improve the summary and link notes.
  5. Keep it short. Detail belongs behind the links, fetched only when needed.

FAQ

What is an llms.txt file?

A markdown file at /llms.txt (or a sub-path) that gives AI agents a short summary of a site and a curated list of links to read. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024; v2 of the proposal was published on August 10, 2026 at llmstxt.org.

What is the llms.txt format?

An H1 with the site name (the only required part), then an optional blockquote summary, optional notes with no headings, and optional H2 sections that list links as "- [name](url): notes". An H2 named Optional marks links agents can skip.

Does llms.txt help Google rankings?

No. Google said on June 15, 2026 that llms.txt files are not needed for Google Search and do not affect visibility or rankings either way. It is still fine to publish one for AI agents and other services.

Where do I put llms.txt?

At the root of your site as /llms.txt, or at a sub-path like /docs/llms.txt to cover only the pages under that path. Serve it as plain text.

Is this llms.txt generator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.

What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access. llms.txt tells AI agents what the site is about and where the useful content lives, and is read on demand when an agent needs it.
