ChatGPT Pro API credits: is up to $500 a month really free, and what's the catch?
Short answer
Yes, it is real and it costs nothing extra, but only if you already pay for ChatGPT Pro or Business. Pro $100 gets $100 a month in OpenAI API credits, Pro $200 gets $200 and Pro $500 gets $500. ChatGPT Plus, Go and Free get nothing. You can claim only after 7 days of paid Pro, the first grant is prorated, unused credits expire every billing cycle, and they don't cover Codex through an API key or raise your ChatGPT limits.
What are ChatGPT Pro API credits?
They are free credits for the OpenAI API that now come bundled with a paid ChatGPT Pro or Business plan. You link your ChatGPT subscription to an API organization you own, and every time the subscription renews, that organization gets a new grant to spend on API calls. OpenAI's developer guide puts it plainly: "Eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscriptions can claim free API credits as part of their subscription benefits."
The point is to get ChatGPT subscribers building their own apps and agents on the API, not to give you more ChatGPT. That difference matters for the catches below.
Why is everyone posting about the $500 API credits?
@OpenAIDevs announced it on October 28, 2026 at 23:17 UTC (03:17 Dubai on October 29). When we checked through the X API on the morning of October 30 (Dubai):
- The announcement: 1,918,799 views, 8,917 likes, 5,733 bookmarks, 932 quotes and 611 replies.
- The "Start building" reply with the claim link: 277,774 views and 1,302 bookmarks. The credit amounts reply: 224,849 views.
- Post volume: posts mentioning "API credits" with ChatGPT or OpenAI went from 36 on October 27 to 107 on October 28 and 902 on October 29 (UTC days), plus 78 more by 06:23 UTC on October 30.
- It landed the same week as a much bigger ChatGPT post: @thsottiaux wrote on October 29 that OpenAI is "doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium" and won't reduce Pro 200 limits after all. That post had 4,045,064 views and 35,218 likes.
Most copies of the news say "free $500 a month". The replies ask the same three things: do I qualify, why can't I see it, and what's the catch. Here are the answers from OpenAI's own pages.
Who is eligible for ChatGPT API credits?
From OpenAI's help center and API guide, checked October 30, 2026:
| ChatGPT plan | API credits per month |
|---|---|
| Pro ($100 tier) | $100 |
| Pro ($200 tier) | $200 |
| Pro ($500 tier) | $500 |
| Business, Standard seat | $20 per paid seat, pooled |
| Business, Premium seat | $100 per paid seat, pooled |
| Business workspace cap | $500 a month ($6,000 a year if billed annually) |
| Plus, Go, Free | Not eligible |
| Enterprise, Edu, legacy Codex seats | Not eligible |
On Pro, the credit equals the plan price: you pay $200 and you get $200 of API credit on top of ChatGPT. On Business, OpenAI's own example is 5 Standard seats and 3 Premium seats, which gives $100 + $300 = $400 a month; 10 Standard plus 4 Premium would be $600, so it is capped at $500.
There are three more conditions. Your paid plan must have been active for at least 7 days. Free trials and complimentary subscriptions don't count. And you must own both sides: the ChatGPT subscription (or Business workspace) and the API organization that receives the credits, using the same email address on both. For Business, a workspace admin role is not enough; it has to be an owner.
Does ChatGPT Plus get API credits?
No. This is the most common question in the replies, and OpenAI's pages answer it directly: "Plus, free trials subscriptions do not qualify for this offer." The ChatGPT pricing page shows "Monthly API credits: No" for Free, Go and Plus. If you move from Pro down to Plus, Go or Free, the API link is removed at the end of that billing cycle.
Plus is $20 a month and the cheapest Pro tier is $100 a month, according to OpenAI's pricing pages. So upgrading from Plus costs $80 more a month and returns $100 of API credit, plus the higher Pro limits. That only makes sense if you would actually spend that much on the API.
How do you claim the ChatGPT Pro API credits?
- Wait until your paid Pro plan is at least 7 days old.
- Sign in to ChatGPT with the account that owns the subscription and open Settings, then Billing. Business owners use the workspace billing settings or the Admin Console.
- Find the API credits benefit and start the claim.
- Pick the API organization that should get the credits. If you have never used the API, you can link your Personal API organization; you don't need to finish API onboarding first.
- Confirm, then open Billing on platform.openai.com and check Credit grants for the amount and expiry date.
You can also start from the other side: Billing on platform.openai.com, then select the subscription to link. You only claim once. After that, a new grant arrives each time the subscription renews, while the benefit exists.
Choose the organization carefully. One subscription links to one API organization, one organization can hold only one such link, and you can't switch it yourself. OpenAI says to contact support, and that a change request "does not guarantee a credit transfer."

What's the catch with the free API credits?
None of these make the offer fake. They just make "free $500 a month" smaller in practice than it sounds.
- Credits expire every cycle. "Monthly grants expire at the end of the subscription billing cycle. Unused credits do not roll over." You can't save up three months for a big project.
- The first grant is prorated. It covers only the days left in your current billing cycle. A Pro $100 user on X reported a first grant of $57, and a Pro $200 user on the OpenAI community forum said they got $7 the day before their renewal. If your renewal is days away, expect a small first number.
- No Codex through an API key. The guide says "Codex usage through API keys is not supported by this benefit," and the credits "don't increase your ChatGPT or signed-in Codex usage limits." They are for apps and agents you build on the API.
- Rate limits still apply. A credit balance "does not remove request-rate, token-rate, model, organization or project limits." A brand-new API organization starts at the lowest usage tier.
- When credits run out, you either stop or pay. With no purchased credits left, requests fail with HTTP 429 and
credit_balance_exhausted. If you have bought credits or turned on Auto Recharge, usage simply continues on your money. - A refund takes the credits back. "An approved full refund removes the unused promotional API credits tied to the refunded charge." Cancelling without a refund keeps already-issued credits until the cycle ends.
- It can change. "The benefit may change or be removed in the future."
Why can't I see the API credits in ChatGPT billing?
OpenAI's troubleshooting list is: check the plan, the paid subscription age, the selected workspace and the account email. It also says "availability also depends on the enabled cohort and country," so not everyone saw it on day one.
On the community forum thread (1,615 views and 15 posts when we checked), people reported these cases. They are user reports, not confirmed by OpenAI:
- Several Pro subscribers who pay through the Apple App Store or Google Play said the claim option was missing or that no new grant arrived after renewal. OpenAI's pages don't say whether app-store billing is excluded.
- A Business owner in Germany with Premium seats saw no option on October 29.
- One user who already owned a verified API organization with the same email first saw only a "create organization" prompt; a "link organization" button appeared a few hours later and the credits arrived.
If you meet every condition and still don't see it, OpenAI asks you to contact support with your subscription, organization ID, the time you tried and the exact error, and not to make repeated claims.
What can $100 of OpenAI API credit actually buy?
It depends on the model. Using OpenAI's API pricing page (standard rates per 1 million tokens, checked October 30), here is a simple example: one agent call that reads 20,000 tokens and writes 2,000.
| Model | Input / output per 1M tokens | Cost of that call | Calls per $100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| gpt-6-luna | $0.10 / $0.50 | $0.003 | about 33,000 |
| gpt-6.1-sol | $2.00 / $10.00 | $0.06 | about 1,660 |
| gpt-6-astra | $10.00 / $50.00 | $0.30 | about 330 |
That is our arithmetic from list prices, before caching discounts (cached input is much cheaper) and before the Batch API, which is half price. Image generation, Realtime voice, hosted agent sandboxes and built-in tools like web search are also billed against the same credits. If you want to see how fast coding agents burn through tokens, our Claude Code cost calculator does the same math for Claude.
How do ChatGPT API credits compare with Claude's?
Anthropic runs a near copy of this offer. Its API credits page lists $100 a month on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x, and $20 per Standard seat or $100 per Premium seat on Team, pooled up to $500. The rules rhyme too: 7 days on the plan first, one linked organization, credits expire each cycle, and they don't cover Claude Code. Free and Pro Claude plans get nothing, the same way ChatGPT Plus gets nothing.
One difference stood out. Anthropic's page says plans bought through the Claude iOS or Android app are eligible (you claim on claude.ai in a browser). OpenAI's pages don't mention app-store billing at all, which is exactly where the forum complaints are.
Is ChatGPT going to change Pro limits again in December?
Maybe. On October 29, @btibor91 spotted a line in the ChatGPT web checkout: "Starting in December, plan usage will have a shared limit across all of ChatGPT and Codex." That post had 291,224 views when we checked. We found no matching announcement in OpenAI's help pages, so treat it as a sign of what's coming, not a confirmed change. Either way, the API credits are separate: they never counted toward ChatGPT or Codex limits.
Should you claim the ChatGPT Pro API credits?
If you already pay for Pro or own a Business workspace, yes. It costs nothing, and even if you never write code, the credits work in the API Playground. Two minutes of setup: link the organization you will actually build in, then check that Auto Recharge is off if you want a hard stop at the free amount.
If you are on Plus, don't upgrade just for the credits unless you already spend real money on the OpenAI API every month. The credits expire, so they are only worth what you use. Our ChatGPT Pro vs Claude Max calculator helps you check whether Pro pays off for how you work.
We did not claim the credits ourselves for this article. Everything above comes from OpenAI's help center, API docs and pricing pages, Anthropic's docs, the OpenAI community forum and the X API, all checked on October 30, 2026.
It is the same pattern as the "free" offers we checked earlier, like Oxion's free Claude Fable 5 code and Claude Opus 5.5 in Antigravity on a trial, except this one comes straight from the model maker and holds up. If you are hunting for cheaper model access, see also what happened to the free MiniMax M3.1 Flash API and how Headroom cuts token bills.

FAQ
What are ChatGPT Pro API credits?
They are free OpenAI API credits that come with a paid ChatGPT Pro or Business subscription, announced by OpenAI on October 28, 2026. You link your subscription to an API organization you own, and every billing cycle that organization gets credit to spend on the OpenAI API: $100 on Pro $100, $200 on Pro $200 and $500 on Pro $500.
Does ChatGPT Plus get free API credits?
No. OpenAI's help center lists Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 and eligible Business workspaces only. Plus, Go, Free, free trials and complimentary subscriptions do not qualify, and Enterprise and Edu are not eligible either. If you downgrade from Pro to Plus, the API link is removed at the end of the billing cycle.
How do I claim the ChatGPT Pro API credits?
After your paid Pro plan has been active for 7 days, open Settings, then Billing in ChatGPT (chatgpt.com/settings/billing), find the API credits benefit, pick the API organization that should receive the credits and confirm. You can also start from Billing on platform.openai.com. Your ChatGPT and API accounts must use the same email, and you must own both the subscription and the API organization.
Do ChatGPT API credits roll over?
No. Monthly grants expire at the end of your subscription billing cycle and unused credits do not roll over. Your first grant is also prorated for the days left in the current cycle, so if you claim near your renewal date the first amount can be small.
Can I use the API credits for Codex?
Not through an API key. OpenAI says the benefit does not cover Codex usage through API keys, and the credits do not raise your ChatGPT or signed-in Codex limits. They cover API Platform usage such as the Responses API, Agents API, Realtime, Images and built-in tools.
What happens when the free API credits run out?
Free credits are used before any credits you bought. If you have no purchased credits left, API requests fail with HTTP 429 and the error code credit_balance_exhausted. Nothing is charged unless you add paid credits or turn on Auto Recharge, so check those settings if you want a hard stop.
Is the $500 API credits offer legit?
Yes. It is documented on OpenAI's help center and API docs, and it was announced by @OpenAIDevs on X. Claim it only inside ChatGPT billing or platform.openai.com. You never need to send anyone your API key or password to get it, so ignore links or DMs that promise free OpenAI credits.
